TARGET-SETTING 2018

In 2018 Manchester Climate Change Agency and Partnership developed the 'Playing Our Full Part' proposal, to set out a proposed set of targets for Manchester to adopt to be in line with the Paris Agreement and the latest climate science. The proposal was based on recommendations by the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of Manchester.

'Playing Our Full Part' was published in October 2018. In November 2018, the proposed targets were formally adopted by Manchester City Council, on behalf of the city.

The targets cover Manchester's direct CO2 emissions, from our buildings and transport:

  • Emit only 15 million tonnes CO2 during 2018-2100 – our ‘carbon budget’

  • Reduce emissions by at least 13% year-on-year

  • Become a zero carbon city by 2038, at the latest

The document also set out the need for Manchester to tackle its indirect / consumption-based CO2 emissions as well as those from the city's aviation activities, including Manchester Airport.
