MANCHESTER CLIMATE CHANGE AGENCY: PROUD TO BE CARBON LITERATE

Manchester Climate Change Agency is responsible for overseeing and championing climate change action in the city. Our ambition, with support from Manchester Climate Change Partnership, is that Manchester will play its full part in limiting the impacts of climate change and create a healthy, green, socially just city where everyone can thrive. This vital work is underpinned by a robust knowledge and passion for taking meaningful action on climate change, as such, our commitment to carbon literacy and continued learning is essential.

With a new team in place, Manchester Climate Change Agency reembarked on its carbon literacy journey in 2022, recieving a Gold-Standard certification in June 2023.

As a starting point, all staff have received training through Manchester City Council’s accredited course and new employees will be required to complete this training within their first three-months of starting. The training has been very well received to date:

“I think Carbon Literacy is a great initiative to raise baseline understanding of the carbon challenge and it’s a vital part of raising awareness across sectors to enable more climate-positive decision-making across organisations.”

“The training has been very informative; whilst as an organisation we already have an in-depth knowledge of climate change the training provides a good understanding of the science behind climate change and the consequences of not taking action. As we grow our organisation we have integrated the training as a key task in our induction process, giving all employees a standard level of knowledge.”

“The training emphasises the importance of individual action and how we can contribute to reducing our own and the city’s carbon footprint. The training inspired me to prioritise eating locally and seasonally to reduce my food miles.”

Further to this, Manchester Climate Change Agency is delighted to have The Carbon Literacy Trust on board as an official member of the Manchester Climate Change Partnership. We continue to champion carbon literacy across our networks, integrate carbon literacy throughout our project delivery, most notably through the National Lottery Climate Action Funded programme, In Our Nature, and embed carbon literacy into everything we do, both at an organisational and individual level.

Manchester Climate Change Agency aim to become a Platinum-Standard Carbon Literate Organisation in 2024.
