Aiming to deliver net zero carbon sites by 2025

Success story: Wates

  • 2025 AIM TO DEVELOP ZERO CARBON SITE SETUPS ACROSS ALL

  • CO-BENEFITS SIGNIFICANT COMMERCIAL SAVINGS MADE FROM REDUCED FUEL CONSUMPTION AND LOWER DEMAND FOR ENERGY

Wates construction are aiming to deliver zero carbon site setups across all projects by 2025, capitalising on the experience of their internal Technical Excellence Centre and the accessibility of sustainable solutions within the Wates Innovation Network.

Wates have developed and are trialling net-zero standards for their sites, bringing together a range of standards focused on renewable energy solutions and energy reduction.

Key elements include:

  • Partnership with a low carbon energy provider to ensure that all sites are using electricity, derived from 100% renewable sources

  • Implementation of energy monitoring technology to improve the measurement of energy and emissions, enabling action to be taken to reduce consumptioN

  • Introduction of “Eco cabins” – energy efficient / low carbon site welfare units powered in part by solar PV technology

  • Switching to electric powered machinery and equipment, eliminating the need for liquid fuels

  • Use of energy efficient hybrid generators – these combine traditional generator sets with a built-in battery, enabling a more fuel-efficient source of power

  • Switching from traditional diesel to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), as a sustainable alternative

  • Introduction of EV charging areas, enabling Wates employees a to charge their cars, incentivising the move away from petrol and diesel vehicles.

Wates are committed to leading the construction sector by example as part of the UK’s broader target to achieve net-zero by 2050. Wates understand that to drive tangible, long lasting, long-term change, it is vital that we seek to collaborate with external organisations and support wider society through partnerships and engagement. By joining the partnership, we hope to drive positive change and by connecting our in-house capabilities to support the Manchester Climate Change Partnership, we are confident we can add real value to the partnership.”
