Success Story: The Carbon Literacy Project

  • 92,935 CARBON LITERATE INDIVIDUALS ACROSS 26 COUNTRIES

  • 185,870 CARBON REDUCTION ACTIONS PLEDGED BY LEARNERS

  • 686 UNIQUE ACCREDITED COURSES DESIGNED, ACROSS 16 SECTORS

The pioneering Carbon Literacy Project is one of Manchester’s most successful sustainability exports.

Founded and created in Manchester in 2012, Carbon Literacy® is a training standard that provides people with an awareness of the carbon costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions on an individual, community and organisational basis.

As of 2024, the unique approach of a day’s worth of learning to deliver knowledge, motivation and inspiration has been brought to 92,935 individuals in 7,476 organisations worldwide.

This means the number of certified learners worldwide has more than doubled in just 18 months. In December 2023 a record-breaking 2,303 individuals completed training in 24 hours as part of the Carbon Literacy Project’s third International Carbon Literacy Action Day.

During 2023, the Carbon Literacy Project also welcomed 208 new training professionals, 77 Carbon Literate Organisations and accredited 188 new Carbon Literacy courses.

In total, the 185,870 carbon reduction actions pledged so far by Carbon Literate citizens in Manchester and beyond will save an estimated 335,000 tonnes of carbon.

“We are incredibly excited to see what more 2024 has in store, and what else we can achieve together this year, to progress Carbon Literacy and consolidate a low carbon culture among the places we live, work, and study.”
