Using out-of-the-box thinking to repurpose waste materials

Success Story: THG

  • 156 TONNES OF NUTRITION SUPPLEMENTS DIVERTED FROM WASTE

  • 31 TONNES OF CARDBOARD PACKAGING REUSED

  • 28 TONNES OF PLASTIC DIVERTED TO NEW USES

THG, a digital-first consumer brands group and Manchester Climate Change Partnership member, has ambitious plans to embed sustainability and circularity into its supply chain. One of THG’s latest triumphs is a novel initiative to repurpose unused waste from its MyProtein sports nutrition brand into fish feed.

In partnership with waste processing company MYGroup, THG has introduced a new process which blends batches of upcycled ingredients to produce a sustainable fish-feed pellet that provides a balanced diet of proteins, fats, carbs, vitamins and minerals.

In total, the project has successfully prevented 156 tonnes of nutrition supplements from going to waste. It has also led to 31 tonnes of cardboard packaging being reused and 28 tonnes of plastic being diverted into making children’s furniture and buckets.

In addition to the positive environmental outcomes, this has also reduced THG’s waste costs.

The out-of-the-box, entrepreneurial thinking shown by THG employees was recognised with a Circular Economy Transition of the Year Award at the 2023 Environmental Finance Sustainability Company Awards.

“I am incredibly proud of the teams at THG who identified a problem surrounding Myprotein products that cannot be resold – and otherwise disposed of – and came up with an innovative solution to circularity.

This recognition showcases that innovation is at the heart of THG and will continue to spur on more innovative sustainability efforts.”
