WE’RE INVESTING
IN OUR FUTURE
We're investing in our future by divesting from fossil fuels
The University of Manchester are stepping up for zero carbon by decarbonising a £200M portfolio to drive sustainable investment.
Since 2019, the University has reduced the carbon intensity of its £200m+ investment portfolio by 55% and has divested from coal, oil and gas. It has also taken positive action to invest in a sustainable global equities fund which tracks against a Paris-Aligned benchmark index.
By changing where we put our money, we’re helping to make our zero carbon, climate resilient ambition a reality.
There are lots of ways that Manchester is stepping up for zero carbon already, but as a city we are not currently on track. It’s up to all of us to play our part to create a greener, fairer, healthier city where everyone can thrive.
STEP UP AND SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO
WHY IS THERE A NEED FOR ZERO CARBON INVESTMENT?
Significant investment, as well as the attraction of new investors and new investment models, are required to cover the cost of transitioning to a zero carbon, climate resilient city.
Improving the efficiency of our existing buildings and ensuring new buildings are built to net zero standards, adapting our infrastructure to ensure it is resilient to a changing climate, creating integrated and accessible public transport systems and enabling more active travel, decarbonising our energy system - by moving away from fossil fuels and increasing our renewable generation capacity - all have attached costs.
On top of all this, there is also a significant need for divestment in fossil fuels.
HOW DOES ZERO CARBON INVESTMENT BENEFIT PEOPLE AND PLANET?
The ability to finance our zero carbon, climate resilient future is one of the biggest challenges we face. Unlocking investment will help protect Manchester’s residents from the impacts of climate change, and ensure that the costs of doing so don’t fall solely on the public purse; supporting a fair and just transition.
