WE’RE REDUCING

FLOOD RISK

We're improving the climate resilience of our city by reducing flood risk

Manchester’s Mayfield Park is helping to reduce flood risk and build the city’s resilience to climate change by incorporating complex flood mitigation methods into its design; the northern end of the park effectively acts as a flood plain, with flood-resistant planting and rain gardens to gradually allow water to drain from the site.

Not only does Mayfield Park incorporate a 100-year+ climate change flood scenario, but it also demonstrates how green, publicly accessible open spaces can form a critical part in regeneration plans.

River surrounded by a park

There are lots of ways that Manchester is stepping up for zero carbon already, but as a city we are not currently on track. It’s up to all of us to play our part to create a greener, fairer, healthier city where everyone can thrive.

STEP UP AND SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO

MANCHESTER’S FLOOD RISK

Flood risk is an increasingly important issue linked to climate change, and cities which have developed next to rivers, like Manchester, can be particularly vulnerable.

With the increasing likelihood of severe weather, including intense and extended periods of rainfall, the city must adapt to meet this challenge.

MANAGING FLOOD RISK

As a city, Manchester is developing strategies to reduce the likelihood, severity and impacts of flooding.

There are many strategies for managing flood risk, from improving awareness to developing flood warning systems, maintaining and providing new infrastructure, like Mayfield and West Gorton Park, and improving resilience. As an individual or business, it’s important to understand your flood risk and to be prepared with a plan.
