WE’RE POWERING

FOR ZERO CARBON

We’re increasing the city’s renewable energy generation

Manchester Metropolitan University is decarbonising its Birley Fields Energy Centre which provides electricity and heating to various campus buildings and halls of residence.

As well as aiding the shift to renewable energy sources, improving air quality and reducing the University’s reliance on fossil fuels, the upgrade will also improve resilience by delivering more reliable and secure heating and hot water across campus. Once complete, the project will cut university-wide gas use by 27%, delivering an estimated carbon saving of 800 tonnes in its first year.

There are lots of ways that Manchester is stepping up for zero carbon already, but as a city we are not currently on track. It’s up to all of us to play our part to create a greener, fairer, healthier city where everyone can thrive.

STEP UP AND SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO USE RENEWABLE ENERGY?

Energy that is naturally produced, like solar and wind power, is referred to as renewable energy. In addition to being sustainable, renewable energy typically leaves little to no carbon footprint.

HOW DOES RENEWABLE ENERGY HELP PEOPLE AND THE PLANET?

Addressing the climate crisis urgently requires a shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy. As well producing less emissions, renewable energy can also increase public health by reducing some types of air pollution.

Reducing the reliance on fossil fuels increases energy security by diversifying the supply and creates new green jobs.
