WE’RE BUILDING

GREEN

We're building green from the ground up

Bruntwood are stepping up for zero carbon by creating the UK’s lowest carbon workspace.

Bruntwood's EvO building will generate 94% of its energy from solar power and lock away 4,000 tonnes of carbon in its timber structure. It has 58% lower running costs than a traditional commercial new build.

There are lots of ways that Manchester is stepping up for zero carbon already, but as a city we are not currently on track. It’s up to all of us to play our part to create a greener, fairer, healthier city where everyone can thrive.

STEP UP AND SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO

WHAT DO WE MEAN BY NET ZERO NEW BUILDS

For a building to be considered net zero it should be built in a way that reduces energy demand once occupied, minimises the embodied carbon associated with construction materials and processes, and be supplied by low carbon energy.

Performance measurements should also be in place, to ensure the building operates as intended.

HOW DO NET ZERO NEW BUILDS BENEFIT PEOPLE AND PLANET?

The 2022 Update to the Manchester Climate Change Framework showed that buildings are responsible for 76% of the city’s direct emissions.

Retrofitting our existing buildings is one piece of the puzzle, the other is ensuring that our new buildings do not need to be retrofit in the future.

Net zero new buildings also have the added benefit of providing more affordable and comfortable places to live and work.
