WE’RE GREENING

OUR CITY

We're improving the climate resilience of our city by creating more green spaces

Manchester City Council are stepping up for zero carbon by helping to plant over 10,000 trees and 10 community orchards across the city between 2023 and 2024. This is part of a wider initiative to support Manchester to plant 64,000 new trees by 2050 to help make Manchester more resilient to climate change.

Through this, Manchester isn’t just mitigating against climate risks, but also bolstering the health and wellbeing of the city.

There are lots of ways that Manchester is stepping up for zero carbon already, but as a city we are not currently on track. It’s up to all of us to play our part to create a greener, fairer, healthier city where everyone can thrive.

STEP UP AND SEE WHAT YOU CAN DO

WHAT IS URBAN GREENING?

Urban greening involves making our towns and cities greener by adding more trees, hedges, parks, gardens and ponds.

HOW DOES URBAN GREENING HELP PEOPLE AND THE PLANET?

Urban greening lessens the impacts of climate change by cooling our city, benefiting wildlife, reducing flood risk, and decreasing air and noise pollution.

Green spaces reduce carbon emissions by soaking up carbon and increasing opportunities for local food production. Time spent in green spaces can also lead to improved physical and mental health.
